HepC prescriptions now available with GP2U

The new Direct Acting Antiviral Medications for Hepatitis C, Harvoni, Sovaldi, Ribavirin and Daklinza, are now listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme (PBS).

PBS listing means that you will be able to get government subsidised medication from your local pharmacy. In order to access the life changing medication you will need a prescription from a General Practitioner (GP) or liver specialist.

In order to determine the most appropriate medication you will need to have some pathology tests to determine your genotype. The GP or Specialist will provide you with a pathology referral during your initial consultation. Once the pathology tests are returned your GP, in consultation with a specialist, will decide upon the appropriate treatment and issue you with a prescription.

Most patients require an 8-12 week course of medication during which they will have two or three consultations with their prescribing doctor to monitor any side effects and viral load count. At the completion of the course of medication another pathology test is required to review your sustained virological response (SVR).
